Samuel Leonard Pitkin, from East Hartford, CT, entered the American Literary, Scientific, and Military Academy (forerunner of Norwich University) in 1821 and graduated in 1823. Later he was involved in the dry goods business, the manufacture of gunpowder, and banking. Pitkin also served in the Connecticut State Militia from 1823-1838, rising to the rank of major general. He served as Adjutant General of the State of Connecticut from 1838-1844 and was active in state and local politics. He marrie...
